Westminster's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Westminster’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from cleaner air, safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 82 per cent of Westminster residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, reflecting the borough’s highly connected transport network and continued efforts to reduce reliance on private vehicles. This shift has been supported by sustained investment in street safety, public transport and active travel.

Cycling has been encouraged through the installation of more than 880 new on‑street cycle parking spaces, making it easier for residents and visitors to choose cycling for short trips. Westminster has also supported skills and confidence, with over 670 adults and children receiving cycle training during the three‑year period.

Pedestrian safety and comfort have been improved through continued investment in street upgrades and public realm schemes, helping to manage high footfall and support safe movement in one of London’s busiest boroughs.

Westminster has also made progress on cleaner transport, installing over 1,300 on‑street electric vehicle charging points to support the transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles. Alongside this, 30 schools have achieved Travel for Life gold accreditation, recognising sustained action to reduce car use on the school run and promote walking, cycling and public transport.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Westminster’s changing streets are helping create a cleaner, safer and more sustainable environment, supporting residents, businesses and visitors while making it easier for people to travel safely and confidently every day.
