Wandsworth's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Wandsworth’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads, cleaner air and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 77 per cent of Wandsworth residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, reflecting a strong shift towards more sustainable ways of getting around. This change has been supported by continued investment in safer streets, improved public transport access and better conditions for walking and cycling.

Families have benefited in particular from the expansion of nine School Streets, which restrict through traffic at school drop‑off and pick‑up times. These schemes help improve air quality outside schools, reduce congestion and create calmer, safer streets for children and parents.

Pedestrian safety has been further improved through the delivery of 27 new protected crossing facilities, making it easier and safer for people of all ages and abilities to cross busy roads. Cycling has also been supported through the installation of over 160 new cycle and scooter parking spaces at schools, helping encourage active travel from an early age.

Wandsworth has also made progress on cleaner transport, installing more than 720 on‑street electric vehicle charging points to support the transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles. Alongside this, nearly a kilometre of new or extended bus lane has been delivered, helping improve bus reliability and journey times.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Wandsworth’s changing streets are helping create healthier, safer and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting community life while making it easier for people to travel safely and confidently every day.
