Southwark's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade
Southwark’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from cleaner air, safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.
Between 2022 and 2025, 82 per cent of Southwark residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, placing the borough among the higher performers in London. This shift has been supported by continued investment in safer streets and infrastructure that prioritises walking, cycling and public transport.
Cycling has been supported through the delivery of four kilometres of new or upgraded cycle routes, improving local connectivity and helping make cycling a practical choice for everyday travel. Alongside this, nearly 4,800 adults and children have received cycle training, supporting confidence and skills for people of all ages.
Families and pedestrians have also benefited from safety improvements, with 16 new protected crossing facilities delivered, making streets easier and safer to cross and improving accessibility across the borough.
Southwark has also made progress on cleaner transport, installing more than 1,000 on‑street electric vehicle charging points to support the transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles. In addition, 107 schools have achieved Travel for Life gold accreditation, recognising sustained action to reduce car use on the school run and encourage walking, cycling and public transport.
Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Southwark’s changing streets are helping create healthier, more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting community life while making it easier for people to travel safely and confidently every day.
