Richmond upon Thames' Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade
Richmond upon Thames’ streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads, cleaner air and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.
Between 2022 and 2025, 69 per cent of Richmond residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, reflecting a strong shift towards more sustainable ways of getting around. This change has been supported by six kilometres of new or upgraded cycle routes, improving local connectivity and making cycling a practical option for everyday travel.
Pedestrian safety has also been improved with the delivery of eight new protected crossing facilities, helping people of all ages and abilities to cross busy roads more safely and confidently. These schemes contribute to calmer streets and a more accessible walking environment across the borough.
Richmond has also made progress on cleaner transport, installing more than 730 on‑street electric vehicle charging points to support the transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles. In addition, four kilometres of road have had speed limits reduced to 20mph, helping create safer neighbourhoods and reducing the severity of collisions.
Public transport accessibility has been strengthened too, with five bus stops upgraded to be fully accessible, ensuring bus travel is inclusive and easier to use for all residents.
Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Richmond upon Thames’ changing streets are helping create healthier, safer and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting everyday travel while making it easier for residents to move around their borough with confidence.
