Redbridge's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Redbridge’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 63 per cent of Redbridge residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, reflecting continued progress towards more sustainable travel choices across the borough. This shift has been supported by targeted investment to improve safety, accessibility and conditions for active travel.

Cycling has been supported through the delivery of four kilometres of new or upgraded cycle routes, helping improve local connectivity and making cycling a more practical choice for everyday journeys. Alongside this, more than 2,500 adults and children have received cycle training, helping build confidence and skills for people of all ages.

Families have also benefited from the expansion of 29 School Streets, which restrict through traffic at school drop‑off and pick‑up times. These schemes have helped improve air quality outside schools, reduce congestion and make streets safer and calmer for children and parents.

Redbridge has also made progress on cleaner transport, installing more than 550 on‑street electric vehicle charging points to support the move away from petrol and diesel vehicles. In addition, over 15,000 square metres of sustainable drainage systems have been installed, helping manage surface water and create greener, more resilient streets.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Redbridge’s changing streets are helping create safer, healthier and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting everyday travel while making it easier for residents to move around their borough with confidence.
