Newham's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Newham’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 70 per cent of Newham residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, reflecting a strong shift towards more sustainable travel choices. This change has been supported by eight kilometres of new or upgraded cycle routes, helping improve local connectivity and making cycling a more practical option for everyday travel.

Families have benefited in particular from the expansion of 33 School Streets, which restrict through traffic at school drop‑off and pick‑up times. These schemes have helped improve air quality outside schools, reduce congestion and make streets safer and calmer for children and parents.

Support for walking and cycling has also included the installation of new cycle and scooter parking at schools, helping remove barriers to active travel and encouraging healthier travel habits from an early age.

Public transport has benefited too, with one kilometre of new or extended bus lane delivered, helping improve reliability and journey times on key routes. Alongside this, over 1,400 square metres of sustainable drainage systems have been installed, supporting greener streets, managing surface water and creating more resilient neighbourhoods.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Newham’s changing streets are helping create healthier, safer and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting everyday travel while making it easier for residents to move around their borough with confidence.
