Merton's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Merton’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 66 per cent of Merton residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, reflecting continued progress towards more sustainable travel choices. This shift has been supported by targeted investment to improve street safety and encourage active and public transport for everyday trips.

Cycling has been supported through the delivery of four kilometres of new or upgraded cycle routes, helping improve local connectivity and making cycling a more practical option for short journeys. In addition, more than 1,100 adults and children have received cycle training, supporting confidence and skills for people of all ages.

Merton has also made progress on cleaner transport, with 630 on‑street electric vehicle charging points installed to support the move away from petrol and diesel vehicles. Alongside this, investment in greener streets has included the installation of sustainable drainage systems, helping manage surface water and support more resilient neighbourhoods.

Work with schools has played an important role in encouraging sustainable travel habits, with 27 schools achieving Travel for Life gold accreditation, recognising sustained efforts to reduce car use and promote walking, cycling and public transport.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Merton’s changing streets are helping create safer, healthier and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting everyday travel while making it easier for residents to move around their borough with confidence.
