Lewisham's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Lewisham’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads, cleaner air and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 74 per cent of Lewisham residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, placing the borough among the stronger performers in London. This shift has been supported by 12 kilometres of new or upgraded cycle routes, helping improve connectivity and making cycling a more practical choice for everyday travel.

Cycling has been further encouraged through the installation of more than 470 new on‑street cycle parking spaces, removing a key barrier to ownership and use. Alongside this, improvements to streets and junctions have helped create safer and more welcoming conditions for people choosing to walk or cycle.

Public transport has also seen targeted investment, with 47 bus stops made fully accessible, improving the experience for passengers and supporting inclusive travel across the borough. In addition, 0.7 kilometres of new or extended bus lanes have been delivered, helping improve reliability and journey times.

Lewisham has also begun supporting the transition to cleaner transport, installing 40 on‑street electric vehicle charging points to help residents move away from petrol and diesel vehicles. Combined with wider traffic reduction and safety measures, these schemes are contributing to healthier neighbourhoods.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference.
