Lambeth's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Lambeth’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from cleaner air, safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 82 per cent of Lambeth residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, placing the borough among the higher performers in London. This shift has been supported by 22 kilometres of new or upgraded cycle routes and the installation of over 460 new on‑street cycle parking spaces, helping make cycling a practical choice for everyday travel.

Families have also benefited from the expansion of 29 School Streets, which restrict through traffic at school drop‑off and pick‑up times. These schemes have helped improve air quality outside schools, reduced congestion and made streets safer and calmer for children and parents.

Lambeth has also made progress on cleaner transport, installing more than 670 on‑street electric vehicle charging points to support the move away from petrol and diesel vehicles. Alongside this, over 7,300 adults and children have received cycle training, helping build confidence and encourage more people to choose active travel.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Lambeth’s changing streets are helping create healthier, more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting community life while making it easier for people to travel safely and confidently every day.
