Kingston upon Thames' Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade
Kingston upon Thames’ streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads, cleaner air and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.
Between 2022 and 2025, 60 per cent of Kingston residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, reflecting steady progress towards more sustainable travel choices. This shift has been supported by borough‑wide measures to improve safety, reduce traffic speeds and encourage active travel for everyday trips.
Road safety has been a key focus, with 24.3 kilometres of road having speed limits reduced to 20mph. These changes help reduce the severity of collisions, create calmer streets and make walking and cycling more appealing for people of all ages.
Families have also benefited from the delivery of eight School Streets, which restrict through‑traffic at school drop‑off and pick‑up times. These schemes help improve air quality outside schools, reduce congestion and create safer, more welcoming streets for children and parents.
Kingston has also invested in supporting cycling and cleaner transport. More than 4,500 adults and children have received cycle training, helping build confidence and skills for cycling on local streets, while 356 on‑street electric vehicle charging points have been installed, supporting the shift away from petrol and diesel vehicles.
Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Kingston upon Thames’ changing streets are helping create healthier, safer and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting everyday travel while making it easier for residents to move around their borough with confidence.
