Islington's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade
Islington’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from cleaner air, safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.
Between 2022 and 2025, 87 per cent of Islington residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, placing the borough among the highest performers in London. This shift has been supported by continued investment in walking, cycling and public transport, helping make sustainable travel the easiest choice for everyday journeys.
Cycling has been further supported through the delivery of four kilometres of new or upgraded cycle routes, improving local connectivity and helping residents travel safely and comfortably by bike. In addition, over 360 new on‑street cycle parking spaces have been installed, making it easier to store bicycles close to home and local destinations.
Islington has also invested in encouraging active travel from an early age. 118 new cycle and scooter parking spaces have been installed at schools, while more than 1,300 adults and children have received cycle training, helping build confidence and skills for people of all ages.
Progress has also been made on cleaner transport, with over 250 on‑street electric vehicle charging points installed, supporting the transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles. Combined with traffic reduction measures and improvements to the public realm, completed schemes are helping reduce emissions and create greener streets.
Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Islington’s changing streets are helping create healthier, safer and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting community life while making it easier for people to travel safely and confidently every day.
