Hillingdon's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Hillingdon’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 51 per cent of Hillingdon residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, reflecting continued progress towards more sustainable travel choices. This shift has been supported by targeted investment to improve safety, accessibility and active travel opportunities across the borough.

Pedestrian safety has been strengthened through the delivery of three new protected crossing facilities, helping make busy roads easier and safer to cross for people of all ages and abilities. These improvements support walking and wheeling while contributing to calmer, more accessible streets.

Hillingdon has also invested in supporting cycling, with over 1,100 adults and children receiving cycle training during the three‑year period. Alongside this, 241 new cycle and scooter parking spaces have been installed at schools, helping remove barriers to active travel and encourage healthier travel habits from an early age.

Work with schools has played an important role in promoting sustainable travel, with 63 schools across the borough achieving Travel for Life gold accreditation, recognising long‑term action to reduce car use on the school run and encourage walking, cycling and public transport.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Hillingdon’s changing streets are helping create safer, more accessible and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting everyday travel while making it easier for residents to move around their borough with confidence.
