Havering's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade
Havering’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.
Between 2022 and 2025, 49 per cent of Havering residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, reflecting steady progress towards more sustainable travel choices in the borough. This shift has been supported by targeted investment to improve safety and encourage walking and cycling for everyday trips.
Families have benefited in particular from the expansion of 15 School Streets, which restrict through traffic at school drop‑off and pick‑up times. These schemes help improve air quality outside schools, reduce congestion and make streets safer and calmer for children and parents.
Pedestrian safety has been further improved through the delivery of 15 new protected crossing facilities, making it easier and safer for people of all ages and abilities to cross busy roads and move around their neighbourhoods.
Havering has also invested in building confidence and supporting active travel, with more than 4,400 adults and children receiving cycle training over the three‑year period. In addition, over 1,000 new school cycle and scooter parking spaces have been installed, helping remove barriers to sustainable travel and encouraging healthy travel habits from an early age.
Work with schools has played an important role too, with 115 Havering schools achieving Travel for Life gold accreditation, recognising sustained action to reduce car use and promote walking, cycling and public transport.
Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Havering’s changing streets are helping create safer, healthier and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting everyday travel while making it easier for residents to move around their borough with confidence.
