Harrow's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Harrow’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 56 per cent of Harrow residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, reflecting steady progress towards more sustainable travel choices. This shift has been supported by targeted investment to improve road safety and encourage walking and cycling for everyday trips.

Road safety has been strengthened through the introduction of four kilometres of road with speed limits reduced to 20mph, helping to create calmer streets and reduce the severity of collisions. Pedestrian safety has also been improved with the delivery of three new protected crossing facilities, making it easier and safer for people to cross busy roads.

Harrow has also focused on supporting cycling, particularly for young people. 168 new cycle and scooter parking spaces have been installed at schools, removing barriers to active travel and encouraging healthy travel habits from an early age. Alongside this, more than 700 adults and children have received cycle training, helping to build confidence and skills for cycling on local streets.

Work with schools has played an important role, with 37 schools achieving Travel for Life gold accreditation, recognising sustained action to reduce car use and promote walking, cycling and public transport for the school run.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Harrow’s changing streets are helping create safer, more accessible and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting everyday travel while making it easier for residents to move around their borough with confidence.
