Haringey's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade
Haringey’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.
Between 2022 and 2025, 77 per cent of Haringey residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, reflecting a strong shift towards more sustainable ways of getting around. This has been supported by continued investment in safer streets, active travel and improvements to public transport access across the borough.
Families have benefited in particular from the expansion of 37 School Streets, which restrict through traffic at school drop‑off and pick‑up times. These schemes help improve air quality outside schools, reduce congestion and make streets safer and calmer for children and parents.
Pedestrian safety has been further boosted by the delivery of 14 new protected crossing facilities, improving accessibility and making it easier for people of all ages and abilities to cross busy roads. Alongside this, more than 2,700 adults and children have received cycle training, helping build confidence and encourage cycling for everyday journeys.
Haringey has also invested in greener streets, with almost 5,000 square metres of sustainable drainage systems installed, supporting climate resilience, managing surface water and creating more pleasant public spaces.
Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Haringey’s changing streets are helping create healthier, safer and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting community life while making it easier for people to travel safely and confidently every day.
