Hammersmith & Fulham's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

The streets of Hammersmith & Fulham have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from cleaner air, safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 80 per cent of Hammersmith & Fulham residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, placing the borough among the stronger performers in London. This shift has been supported by borough‑wide measures to reduce traffic dominance, improve street safety and prioritise sustainable travel.

Significant progress has been made on cleaner transport, with more than 3,500 on‑street electric vehicle charging points installed, supporting the move away from petrol and diesel vehicles and helping residents make the transition to cleaner alternatives.

Road safety has also been improved through lower speeds, with 15 kilometres of road having speed limits reduced to 20mph, creating calmer streets and improving conditions for people walking and cycling. These changes help reduce the severity of collisions while making neighbourhoods feel safer and more welcoming.

Hammersmith & Fulham has also invested in greener streets, with over 36,000 square metres of sustainable drainage systems installed. These schemes help manage surface water, reduce flood risk and support greener, more resilient public spaces.

Alongside infrastructure improvements, more than 1,200 adults and children have received cycle training, helping to build confidence and encourage cycling for everyday journeys.
