Hackney's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Hackney’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from cleaner air, safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 88 per cent of Hackney residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, placing the borough among the highest performers in London. This strong uptake has been supported by continued investment in cycling, walking and measures to reduce traffic dominance on local streets.

Cycling has been further enabled through the installation of more than 900 new on‑street cycle parking spaces, making it easier for residents to store bikes close to home and choose cycling for everyday travel.

Families have also benefited from the delivery of 12 new School Streets, which restrict through‑traffic at school drop‑off and pick‑up times. These schemes help improve air quality outside schools, reduce congestion and create safer, calmer streets for children and parents.

Hackney has also made progress on cleaner transport, installing over 880 on‑street electric vehicle charging points to support the transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles. Alongside this, five kilometres of road have had speed limits reduced to 20mph, contributing to safer streets and a more welcoming environment for walking and cycling.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Hackney’s changing streets are helping create healthier, more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting community life while making it easier for people to travel safely and confidently every day.
