Greenwich's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade
Greenwich’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.
Between 2022 and 2025, 63 per cent of Greenwich residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, reflecting a continued shift towards more sustainable ways of getting around. This change has been supported by targeted improvements to streets, public transport and active travel infrastructure across the borough.
Families have benefited in particular from the expansion of 22 School Streets, which restrict through‑traffic at school drop‑off and pick‑up times. These schemes help improve air quality outside schools, reduce congestion and create calmer, safer streets for children, parents and local communities.
Support for cycling has included the installation of more than 300 new on‑street cycle parking spaces, helping make cycling a more practical option for everyday journeys. In addition, over 2,000 adults and children have received cycle training, building confidence and supporting more people to choose cycling for short trips.
Public transport has also benefited from investment, with one kilometre of new bus lane delivered and seven bus stops made fully accessible, helping improve journey reliability and ensure bus travel is inclusive and accessible for all residents.
Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Greenwich’s changing streets are helping create safer, healthier and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting everyday travel while making it easier for residents to move around their borough with confidence.
