Crystal Palace Sports Centre Revamp Moves Closer

Plans to transform Crystal Palace National Sports Centre have taken a significant step forward, bringing the prospect of better sports, leisure and community facilities closer for local people.

A planning application has been submitted to redevelop the 15‑hectare site, which has been a cornerstone of local sport since the 1960s.

The proposals focus heavily on day‑to‑day benefits for residents. Central to the plans is a full refurbishment of the swimming and diving facilities, including the return of the 50‑metre pool. For the first time, shallow water, 25‑metre swimming, 50‑metre swimming and diving would all sit on one level in a single aquatics hall, improving access for families, learners and clubs.

Across the rest of the site, locals could gain a host of new facilities, including five‑a‑side football pitches, padel courts, 3x3 basketball courts and a full‑size artificial multi‑sports pitch. Indoor sports areas would also be upgraded to allow year‑round use for community clubs and casual users.

A new community hub is another key feature, combining sport and social space with an outdoor gym, running track, basketball court and café – creating a place to exercise, relax and meet others.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said the redevelopment would safeguard a “much‑loved sporting and community facility”, backed by millions of pounds of City Hall investment.

Sustainability is also central to the plans, with solar panels and electric heating set to dramatically cut carbon emissions and future running costs.

If approved, the scheme could secure the centre’s future for decades – and deliver greener, more inclusive facilities for the surrounding community.
