Croydon's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Croydon’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads, cleaner air and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 54 per cent of Croydon residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, reflecting a growing shift towards more sustainable travel choices. This change has been supported by targeted investment to improve road safety, reduce traffic speeds and make active and public transport a more attractive option for everyday travel.

Families have benefited in particular from the expansion of 53 School Streets, which restrict through‑traffic at school drop‑off and pick‑up times. These schemes help improve air quality outside schools, reduce congestion and create calmer, safer streets for children, parents and local communities.

Croydon has also invested in helping residents travel more confidently and sustainably. More than 2,000 adults and children have received cycle training, supporting skills, confidence and uptake of cycling for short journeys. Alongside this, improvements to walking environments and borough‑wide safety schemes are helping make streets easier and safer to navigate.

Progress has also been made on cleaner transport, with 382 on‑street electric vehicle charging points installed to support the transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles. Combined with traffic reduction measures and school‑focused interventions, completed schemes are contributing to lower emissions and healthier neighbourhoods.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Croydon’s changing streets are helping create safer, healthier and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting everyday travel while making it easier for residents to move around their borough with confidence.
