City of London's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

The City of London’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from cleaner air, safer roads and better options for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 93 per cent of City of London residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, placing the City among the highest performers in London. This reflects the unique role of the City as one of the best‑connected areas in the capital, with a strong focus on reducing motor traffic and prioritising sustainable travel.

Cycling has been supported through the delivery of 0.8 kilometres of new or upgraded cycle routes and the installation of 221 new on‑street cycle parking spaces, helping to make cycling an easier and more convenient choice for short trips.

Pedestrian safety and accessibility have also been improved. New and upgraded crossings, alongside wider Healthy Streets measures, have made it easier for people to walk and wheel through the City’s busy streets, while supporting safer and more inclusive movement for residents, workers and visitors alike.

The City has also continued to support active travel skills and confidence, with 183 adults and children trained through cycle training programmes, helping more people feel able to travel by bike safely and comfortably.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. The City of London’s changing streets are helping to create a cleaner, safer and more sustainable environment, supporting its role as a global business centre while making it easier for people to travel confidently and sustainably every day.
