Brent's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Brent’s streets have undergone major improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads, better public transport access and improved conditions for walking and cycling. The progress is set out in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 71 per cent of Brent residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys, demonstrating a strong shift towards more sustainable ways of getting around. This change has been supported by borough‑wide measures to make streets calmer and travel safer, alongside continued investment in public transport and active travel.

Safety and accessibility have been key areas of focus. Fourteen kilometres of road have had speed limits reduced to 20mph, helping to cut road danger and create calmer neighbourhoods. Pedestrian safety has also been improved through the delivery of 12 new protected crossing facilities, making it easier for people of all ages and abilities to move around the borough.

Brent has also worked to improve everyday journeys by public transport, with nine bus stops upgraded to be fully accessible, helping ensure that more people can travel confidently by bus. Alongside this, more than 3,000 adults and children have received cycle training, supporting greater confidence and encouraging cycling for everyday trips.

Investment in schools has played an important role too, with 97 schools achieving Travel for Life gold accreditation, recognising sustained action to reduce car use on the school run and promote walking, cycling and public transport.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Brent’s changing streets are helping to create healthier, safer and more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting daily travel while making it easier for residents to move around their borough with confidence.
