Bexley's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Bexley’s streets have seen steady improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads, cleaner air and better support for walking, cycling and public transport. The progress is highlighted in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 44 per cent of Bexley residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys. While the borough has historically relied more heavily on cars, targeted investment is helping make sustainable travel safer and more attractive, particularly for short local trips.

Support for families and schools has been a key focus. During the three‑year period, three new School Streets were introduced, restricting through‑traffic at school drop‑off and pick‑up times. These measures have helped improve safety outside schools, reduce congestion and create calmer environments for children and parents. Bexley has also seen 24 schools achieve Travel for Life gold accreditation, recognising long‑term efforts to encourage walking, cycling and public transport on the school run.

Investment in skills and confidence has played an important role, with nearly 4,000 children and adults taking part in cycle training. This helps residents feel more confident using bikes for everyday journeys, supporting healthier and more active lifestyles across the borough.

Bexley has also made progress on cleaner transport, installing 153 on‑street electric vehicle charging points to support the transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles. In addition, new sustainable drainage schemes have been delivered to make streets greener and better able to manage surface water.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Bexley’s changing streets are helping create safer, more sustainable neighbourhoods, supporting everyday travel while improving the quality of life for residents.
