Barnet's Streets Get Safer, Greener Upgrade

Barnet’s streets have undergone important improvements over the past three years, with residents benefiting from safer roads, better air quality and more sustainable transport options. The progress is outlined in a new report examining the impact of investment from Transport for London and the Mayor of London.

Between 2022 and 2025, 57 per cent of Barnet residents walked, cycled or used public transport for their daily journeys. This shift has been supported by targeted investment to make streets safer and more accessible, alongside programmes designed to encourage healthier and more sustainable travel choices across the borough.

Road safety has been a key focus, with 22 kilometres of road brought under new 20mph speed limits to help reduce the severity of collisions and create calmer neighbourhood streets. Slower speeds make it easier and safer for people to walk and cycle, while improving the overall street environment for residents.

Barnet has also invested in supporting families and schools to travel more sustainably. During the three‑year period, 125 schools achieved Travel for Life gold accreditation, recognising long‑term efforts to reduce car use and encourage walking, cycling and public transport on the school run. More than 3,100 children and adults also received cycle training, helping build confidence and skills for everyday journeys.

Progress has also been made on cleaner transport, with 1,483 on‑street electric vehicle charging points installed to support the transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles. In addition, new sustainable drainage schemes have been delivered to help manage surface water and make streets greener and more resilient.

Together, these transport improvements show how targeted local investment can make a real difference. Barnet’s changing streets are helping to create safer, healthier and more sustainable neighbourhoods, making it easier for residents to get around confidently every day.
